{"id":192057,"date":"2021-07-05T08:46:07","date_gmt":"2021-07-05T06:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rothschenk.de\/episode-8-positive-locking-in-the-container\/"},"modified":"2025-06-30T17:02:30","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T15:02:30","slug":"episode-8-positive-locking-in-the-container","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rothschenk.de\/en\/episode-8-positive-locking-in-the-container\/","title":{"rendered":"Episode 8: Positive locking in the container"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Securing loads in <a href=\"https:\/\/rothschenk.de\/en\/container\/\">containers<\/a> is not really a problem, but inspection practice and the damage rate show that many shippers\/stevedores have difficulties with &#8220;knowing how&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<p>In this episode, I will explain the principles of form-fit stowing\/packing and the options for implementation. CTU code 2015 is calculated using the following formula: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C <sub>x,y<\/sub> * m * g<\/strong><strong>  <\/strong><strong>\u2264 <\/strong><strong>r <sub>x,y<\/sub> * P * g<\/strong><strong> + \u00b5 * <sub>Cz<\/sub> * m * g + <sub>Fsec<\/sub><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The formula consists of the following elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Force from the load = <strong>C <sub>x,y<\/sub> * m * g<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retention force of the container = <strong>r <sub>x,y<\/sub> * P * g<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Force from friction = <strong>\u00b5 * <sub>Cz<\/sub> * m * g<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Force from securing devices: = <strong><sub>Fsec<\/sub><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: The restraining force of the container is calculated using the drag coefficient <strong>r <sub>x,y<\/sub><\/strong> and the payload P (which can be found on the container door). The form-fit stowed load is calculated in the longitudinal direction with an acceleration of <strong><sub>Cx=0<\/sub><\/strong>.4g. The retention force<strong>(rx<sub>)<\/sub><\/strong> of the container door is 0.4 * the payload (P) 26,700 kg.  <\/p>\n\n<figure data-wp-context=\"{&quot;imageId&quot;:&quot;69d29d40d8572&quot;}\" style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>If the securing forces <strong><sub>Fsec<\/sub><\/strong> were at least 66,708 N, the scales would be balanced and the load sufficiently secured. More securing force would of course also mean more safety and reserve. moving the gap to the inside of the container and closing it with stowage aids (e.g. with <a href=\"https:\/\/rothschenk.de\/en\/product-category\/dunnage-bags\/\">dunnage bag<\/a>\/dunnage\/empty pallets).<\/p>\n\n<p>The positive fit to the container door<strong>(<sub>rx=0<\/sub>.4<\/strong>) is then given again and the calculation looks as follows:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fill the <a href=\"https:\/\/rothschenk.de\/en\/container\/\">container<\/a> with cargo without gaps (e.g. bulk goods)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stow\/pack the load so that the total gap is less than 15 cm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compensate gaps with dunnage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compensate for gaps by form-fit securing with <a href=\"https:\/\/rothschenk.de\/en\/product-category\/lashing-en\/\">lashing straps<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. fill with piece goods<\/h3>\n\n<p>Filling the container with bulk material is a simple solution in principle, but it also has its pitfalls if the bulk material is very free-flowing (coffee\/beans etc.). The filling level must then be as high as possible. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. gap sum less than 15 cm<\/h3>\n\n<p>Stowing and packing the load in such a way that the total gap in all directions is less than 15 cm requires that the dimensions of the packages or loading units correspond to the container dimensions. If, as is often the case, Euro pallets are stowed, gaps inevitably occur. If gaps are unavoidable, special attention must be paid to securing the load unit. The load units must be dimensionally stable and resistant to tipping.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. use dunnage<\/h3>\n\n<p>Compensating for gaps with stowage material is common practice. The technically elegant solution is <a href=\"https:\/\/rothschenk.de\/en\/product-category\/dunnage-bags\/\">dunnage bag<\/a>which are filled with air, fill the gaps and thus create a positive fit again. However, this method also has its pitfalls. The CTU Code 2015 dedicates a separate chapter<strong>(Appendix 7 &#8211; Annex 4) <\/strong>to the bumper pads with many formulas that are rather difficult for practitioners to implement. Wood with a tree edge (red arrow) can lead to quarantine in certain countries such as Australia. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:75%\">\n<p>Pressing dunnage into the corrugations of the container wall in this way causes more damage than it provides useful securing force. Unfortunately, this is a common application, even for professional stevedoring companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actual securing force is undetermined and no reliable data can be found. Therefore, this method should not be used unless appropriate tests have produced repeatable results and the handling is clearly described. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Empty pallets are also a popular aid. However, the load-bearing capacity of the lashing eyes in the container and the lashing force of the securing equipment must be taken into account here.<\/p>\n\n<p>Depending on the manufacturer, it is important to check whether the breaking load or the MSL (maximum securing load) is specified. Chapter 2.4.2 of Appendix 7 of the CTU Code 2015 specifies how the MSL is calculated for certain securing devices.
